Almond plants (Amygdalus communis L.) of the Garrigues variety were grown in the field drip irrigated and rainfed. Leaf water potential (Ψ) and leaf conductance (g1) were determined throughout one growing season. Pre-dawn measurement for Ψ in the irrigated treatment was consistent through the growing season, whereas in the rainfed treatment it decreased gradually. Ψ values at midday (Ψ minimum) was closely dependent on atmospheric evaporative demand, and their recovery was quicker in the wet treatment than in the dry. The g1 values were higher in the wet than dry treatments, decreasing in both cases by leaf ageing. Maximum values for g1 were reached when evaporative demand was highest in the day. The relationship between Ψ and g1 revealed a decrease in the hysteresis throughout the growing season, being most marked in the dry treatment. The results highlight the close dependence of Ψ and g1 on evaporative demand, leaf ageing and irrigtion treatment during the growing season.  相似文献

The relationships between and g1 in both treatments showed a continuous decrease of g1 as decreased in spring and summer. Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and tomato Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) were grown hydroponically and examined 2, 5, and 10 d after being deprived of nitrogen (N) supply. Leaf elongation rate declined in both species in response to N stress before there was any reduction in rate of dryweight accumulation. Changes in water transport to the shoot could not explain reduced leaf elongation in tomato because leaf water content and water potential were unaffected by N stress at the time leaf elongation began to decline. Tomato maintained its shoot water status in N-stressed plants, despite reduced water absorption per gram root, because the decline in root hydraulic conductance with N stress was matched by a decline in stomatal conductance. In barley the decline in leaf elongation coincided with a small (8%) decline in water content per unit area of young leaves; this decline occurred because root hydraulic conductance was reduced more strongly by N stress than was stomatal conductance. Nitrogen stress caused a rapid decline in tissue NO 3 - pools and in NO 3 - flux to the xylem, particularly in tomato which had smaller tissue NO 3 - reserves. Even in barley, tissue NO 3 - reserves were too small and were mobilized too slowly (60% in 2 d) to support maximal growth for more than a few hours. Organic N mobilized from old leaves provided an additional N source to support continued growth of N-stressed plants. Abscisic acid (ABA) levels increased in leaves of both species within 2 d in response to N stress. Addition of ABA to roots caused an increase in volume of xylem exudate but had no effect upon NO 3 - flux to the xylem. After leaf-elongation rate had been reduced by N stress, photosynthesis declined in both barley and tomato. This decline was associated with increased leaf ABA content, reduced stomatal conductance and a decrease in organic N content. We suggest that N stress reduces growth by several mechanisms operating on different time scales: (1) increased leaf ABA content causing reduced cell-wall extensibility and leaf elongation and (2) a more gradual decline in photosynthesis caused by ABA-induced stomatal closure and by a decrease in leaf organic N.Abbreviation and symbols ABA abscisic acid - ci leaf internal CO2 concentration - Lp root hydraulic conductance  相似文献

Summary The water relations parameters and the osmoregulatory response ofEremosphaera viridis were investigated both by using the pressure probe technique and by analyzing the intracellular pool of osmotically active agents. In the presence of various concentrations of different salts a biphasic osmoregulatory response was recorded, consisting of a rapid decrease in turgor pressure due to water loss followed by an increase in turgor pressure to the original turgor pressure value (depending on the salt). The values of turgor pressure, volumetric elastic modulus and hydraulic conductivity depended on the composition of the media. Nonelectrolytes did not cause a turgor recovery after the initial water efflux. The second phase of turgor regulation in the presence of salts was characterised by the intracellular accumulation of ions and sugars and required at least 24 hr. Analysis of the cell sap showed that the increase in the internal osmotic pressure was mainly achieved by accumulation of sucrose. Additionally, accumulation of glucose was observed in illuminated cells in the presence of Rb and K. Electron micrographs suggested that the sucrose was produced by degradation of starch granules. Turgor pressure recovery after salt stress seemed to be dependent on temperature and is well correlated with the according photosynthetic activity. The data suggest that a temperature-dependent enzyme which is activated by potassium or rubidium is involved in the regulatory response.  相似文献

Summary For patch-clamp measurements cultured kidney (OK) cells were exposed to osmotic and mechanical stress. Superfusion of a cell in whole cell configuration with hypotonic media (190 mOsm) evokes strong depolarization, which is reversible by returning to the isotonic bath medium. In the cell-attached configuration the exposure to hypotonic media evokes up to six ion channels of homogeneous single-channel properties in the membrane patch. Subsequently, the channels became activated after a time lag of a few seconds. At an applied membrane potential of 0 mV, the corresponding membrane current is directed inward and shows a transient behavior in the time range of minutes. In the same membrane patch these ion channels can be activated by application of negative hydrostatic pressure. The channel has a single-channel conductance of about 22 pS and is permeable to Na+ and K+ as well as to Cl. It is suggested that volume regulation involves mechanoreceptor-operated ion channels.  相似文献

The role of abscisic acid (ABA) in the transport of water and ions from the root to the shoot of sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus) was investigated by application of ABA either to the root medium or to the apical bud. The exudation at the hypocotyl stump of decapitated seedlings was measured with and without hydrostatic pressure (0–0.3 MPa) applied to the root. All ABA concentrations tested (10-10–10-4 mol·l-1) promoted exudation. Maximal amounts of exudate (200% of control) were obtained with ABA at 10-6·mol·l-1 and an externally applied pressure of 0.1 MPa. The effect was rapid and long-lasting, and involved promotion of ion release to the xylem (during the first hours) as well as an increase in hydraulic conductivity. Abscisic acid applied to the apical bud had effects similar to those of the rootapplied hormone. Increased rates of exudation were also obtained after osmotic stress was applied to the root; this treatment increased the endogenous level of ABA in the root as well as in the shoot. Water potentials of the hypocotyls of intact plants increased when the roots were treated with ABA at 5°C, whereas stomatal resistances were lowered. Self-management of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) is dependent on a negative feedback loop of blood glucose (BG) fluctuations, which in turn directs treatment decisions to maintain normal BG. Although this feedback is typically accomplished by self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG), SMBG has limitations, and patients often rely on what their BG feels like. Two studies were performed to evaluate whether patients could learn to more accurately feel/discriminate their BG on the basis of internal cues or internal plus external BG cues. In Study I, BG Awareness Training significantly improved pre- to posttreatment BG estimation accuracy, relative to a control group. Study II replicated BG Awareness Training efficacy in improving BG estimation accuracy. Improvement in estimation accuracy was related only to initial accuracy; those who were initially less accurate improved the most. This improvement was represented in a 31% reduction in dangerous BG estimation errors and a 9% increase in accurate estimates. Resulting estimations were, however, still significantly less accurate than SMBG at the end of training.This research was supported by NIH grants AM282880, AM24177, AM22125, and RR00847 and by the Ames Company. Summary The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD; EC 1.15.1.1) and glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx; EC 1.11.1.9.), the enzymes that metabolize the superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide, respectively, were measured in serum from healthy subjects and patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The activities of SOD and GSHPx in patients with PD were higher than those in normal healthy individuals. These results suggest that the increased activities of these enzymes could be due to oxidative stress in the initial stages of this disease.  相似文献
